UIC is honoured to share that Jernhusen AB, Sweden’s state-owned railway real estate manager, has officially signed the UIC Railway Climate Responsibility Pledge during their visit to UIC headquarters in Paris, a bold commitment to sustainable development and climate leadership.
Jernhusen’s work is foundational to Sweden’s rail infrastructure and ranges from expanding depot capacity in Solna to enhancing stations in Stockholm, Gothenburg and Varberg. Their operations are fully financed through 100% green bonds, aligning their business model with green, long-term urban development goals (https://www.uic.org/com/enews/article/uic-rail-sustainability-index-badge-presented-to-jernhusen).
By signing the pledge, Biljana Pehrsson, Jernhusen AB CEO, commits the company to:
- Reducing energy use and CO₂ emissions;
- Achieving carbon neutrality by 2050;
- Advancing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals through transparent reporting and strategic action.
This achievement follows Jernhusen achieving grade B in the Rail Sustainability Index in 2024 and not only highlights Jernhusen’s sustainability credibility, but also reinforces the vital role of rail as the backbone of decarbonised, sustainable mobility.
Please join us in congratulating Jernhusen and their CEO Biljana Pehrsson on this significant step forward for green infrastructure and climate action.
