Reminder: Support of UIC Noise and Vibration Sector for Shift2Rail activities

Save the date: UIC - Focus on FINE-2 event to be held on 2 November

UIC continues to support the development of solutions to make the railways more economically efficient and environmentally friendly by participating in Shift2Rail projects and holding side events to showcase, promote and support technical solutions and key tools. UIC strives to make the railways more innovative by closely examining and discussing technical developments in the sector with its members. Furthermore, UIC’s contribution to Shift2rail projects will support the global rail community’s efforts to become the backbone of future mobility and enable the development of technology and knowledge exchange.

Online webinar

Governments are encouraged to invest in transport infrastructure while being considerate of sustainable development. Plans for the expansion, improvement and broader adoption of railways are expected to be addressed in many government agendas, especially with the implementation of the European Green Deal. The members of the railway community continue to work actively in academia, in laboratories and in the field to become better neighbours by reducing their environmental and health impacts.

Moving European rail forward into the future, the Shift2Rail Joint Undertaking fosters the introduction of trains that are not only quieter, more comfortable and more dependable, but can also operate on an innovative rail network. The EU-funded FINE-2 project is forming three workstreams to investigate means of enabling integrated mobility management (I2M), saving energy and reducing inconvenient noise and vibration. Specifically, the Fine-2 project will develop tools to help experts understand energy saving potential. It will also improve tunnel resistance characteristic methodologies and enhance energy standards to reflect future developments.

In this context, the UIC Noise and Vibration Sector is holding an online webinar to show its support for railway research activities on noise reduction and increased incentives to reduce noise at source. You are thus invited to the UIC - Focus on Fine2 event to be held online on Tuesday 2 November from 14.00 to 15.30 pm CET.

Agenda

The event highlights will include:
• Welcome and introduction to the project by Rüdiger Garburg of DB, FINE-2 project representative, UIC noise and vibration expert
• Exterior noise tool validation (WP6) [1] by Rita Caminal Barderi, Alstom
• Noise source separation (WP7) [2] by Ainara Gurial Garcia, CAF
• Q&A and concluding remarks by Rüdiger Garburg

[1The objectives of this work package are:

  • to validate methodologies and tools used to simulate the exterior noise generated by equipment (wheel/rail contact not included) in terms of source strength, source directivity and integration effects due to installation in the train;
  • to propose a process for acceptance of industrial simulation tools to be used for exterior noise simulations;
  • to define a methodology to assess the uncertainty of exterior noise simulations (pass-by, including rolling noise and standstill cases).

[2The objectives of this work package are:

  • to support the development of innovative techniques to separate and define the sound power level and directivity of the different types of acoustic sources during pass-by at a constant speed;
  • to support both the simplification and the enhancement of methodologies for distinction between the track and the vehicle in terms of rolling noise. Validation and data collection, including several test scenarios, is expected.
